Anonymize medical records without sending them anywhere
Health data is among the most protected data there is. When you need to share a discharge letter, a lab report or an expert opinion for teaching, a second opinion, research preparation or an AI summary, the patient's identity should not travel with it. ONYRI Sanitize masks it on your device. The record itself is never uploaded.
Runs 100% in your browser. Your file is never uploaded.
What ONYRI finds in medical documents
- Patient names, and names of doctors and relatives
- Social security numbers: French NIR, US SSN, German, Austrian and Swiss numbers
- Dates of birth, admission dates and exam dates
- Home addresses and postcodes
- Phone numbers and email addresses
- Bank details on invoices and reimbursement forms
- ID document numbers in admission files
- Your own identifiers, such as internal patient numbers, through custom rules
How to anonymize a medical document in three steps
- 1
Drop the letter or the report
PDF from your clinical software, Word letter, or scan of a paper record. Scans are read by OCR that runs on your own device.
- 2
Review with a clinician's eye
Check names, numbers and dates. Add the internal patient number or the ward name under “Also mask”. Decide whether dates must go: they often identify a stay.
- 3
Download the masked copy
Use black-marker mode for anything that leaves your organisation. The clinical content stays readable. The identity does not.

Why health data should be masked where it already lives
Under the GDPR, health data is a special category with stricter rules. In the United States, HIPAA sets its own de-identification standards. In both cases, sending a record to one more online service is a decision you would have to justify.
ONYRI removes that step. The document is processed in the browser of the person who already has the right to read it. We do not host the record, not even for a second, because we never receive it.
This keeps good habits easy. A doctor can prepare a teaching case in a minute. A medical secretary can mask a letter before it is forwarded. Nobody has to choose between speed and the patient's privacy.
What you should know before you share the file
- ONYRI does not certify de-identification. HIPAA Safe Harbor lists 18 types of identifiers, and some of them (full-face photos, device serial numbers, rare conditions) are outside what a text detector can find.
- ONYRI has no detector for medical terms: diagnoses and treatments stay visible. A rare disease, a precise date or a small town can identify a patient even with no name. Judge this re-identification risk yourself before sharing.
- Images inside the record, such as X-rays with burned-in names, are not analysed unless the name is readable text for the OCR. Check them one by one.
- Token mode is pseudonymization: the data remains personal health data under the GDPR. Masking reduces exposure. It does not by itself guarantee compliance.
Anonymizing medical records: frequent questions
Is ONYRI HIPAA or GDPR compliant?
Compliance depends on how you use a tool, so we do not claim it for you. What we can state is technical: documents are processed in your browser and are never sent to our servers, so ONYRI does not store or access patient records.
Do you host health data?
No. We host account data only: your email, your plan, your detection settings and usage counters. The documents you process never reach us.
Can I mask our internal patient numbers?
Yes. Create a custom rule that matches the format of your numbers, and save it in a profile. It will then be applied to every document you drop.
Should I remove the dates too?
Often yes. Dates of admission, surgery or birth can single out a patient. ONYRI detects dates; you decide in the preview which ones to keep.
Can I use the result with an AI tool?
Masking the identity first is a sound minimisation step. Still check your organisation's policy on AI tools and health data: removing names does not remove every risk of re-identification.
